On Tuesday 27 February over 35 guests braved the snowy weather conditions to attend an “Audience with” Colette O'Shea, Managing Director of the London portfolio at LandSec . Colette is responsible for Landsec’s £7.8 billion London Portfolio, comprising some 6.5 million sq. ft. of London offices, leisure, retail and residential property, both in development and asset management.

The evening was organised by Real Estate Balance’s Talent and Development Committee for aspiring female and male leaders from our member organisations. It was hosted by Committee member and HR director of LandSec, Diana Breeze, at LandSec's offices at 100 Victoria Street, London.

After an introduction to Real Estate Balance by Talent and Development Committee Chair Karen Friebe, the "Audience with" got underway. Colette’s interviewer was Dom Packwood, a chartered surveyor who works for the Crown Estate on their £7.5 billion central London portfolio and is also a member of our Talent and Development Committee. Dominic posed a range of questions to Colette, covering topics that included her career and ambition, retaining staff, talent and lifestyle changes, resilience and unconscious bias. Colette's thoughtful responses gave the audience a true insight as to how she has achieved such success in her long career in real estate - with "hard work" being top of her list ! Colette also spoke about the importance of seeking out mentors and coaches to help with career development and of calling out bad behaviour at work ( albeit carefully picking the right time and place to do so).

Many thanks to Colette for sharing her valuable insights with us, also to Dom for smoothly guiding the interview with Colette and the audience Q&A. We are sure that those of you who attended despite the adverse weather went away with much food for thought !
