On Thursday 13 September 2018 Real Estate Balance (REB) held an "Audience with", Ian Rand, CEO of Business Banking, Barclays Bank.

Real Estate Balance An Audience with Ian Rand Real Estate Balance An Audience with Ian Rand 13-9-18

During the course of a lively interview conducted by Molly Neal, Head of Corporate Communications at Landsec, Ian provided thought-provoking insights into his career, in particular his commitment to improving diversity and inclusion in the world of banking.

Commenting on the lack of women in senior positions in banking, Ian emphasised the need for companies to "fix the culture and the organisation, not the women". Ian believes that companies need to invest more in leadership training, especially for middle managers, who do, after all, drive most people's experience at work, on topics such as:

  • how to treat people equally and how to talk plainly, regularly and openly – using the right language - about diversity;
  • how to have conversations about job sharing and flexible working, topics of ever-growing importance for both women and men in the workplace, as relevant for people who may need flexibility to care for elderly relatives as it is for maternity returners;
  • transgender issues, where people need to be taken on a" journey of understanding";
  • providing appropriate support to women so that they do not "self-select" out of roles that lead to senior leadership positions (the "golden pathway").

The event also included an introduction to Real Estate Balance by Karen Friebe, Chair of our Developing Leaders Committee and real estate partner at international law firm and Real Estate Balance Member Bird & Bird.

The breakfast event was generously hosted at the London offices of Burges Salmon, a leading independent UK law firm and also a member of Real Estate Balance.

Management Committee member Suzanne Avery wrapped up the event with a warm thanks to Ian, Molly and our hosts Burges Salmon.
